Richmond Graffiti Walk - August 2014

The following pictures were taken around the city of Richmond, VA. Richmond has a vast amount of incomparable murals, that were created by both local and national artists. If you ever visit the city of Richmond, I highly recommend that you take in the many different forms of art that this beautiful city provides.

Norfolk Public Art

In Spring 2014, the city of Norfolk officially established an art district designed to build relationships between business owners, private investors, and civic organizers, in an effort to showcase variations of art and other creative ventures throughout the area. The Norfolk Emerging Arts District (NEAD), or Norfolk Arts District, is set in an area between Brambleton Ave and Granby St/9th St in Downtown Norfolk. The project is very similar to the Richmond, VA art plan, which began in 2011.

Politics aside, I think that this district is a great idea for people from all likes of art in Hampton Roads. Such a district can grow with the support of local businesses, educational institutions (Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, and Tidewater Community College), the citizens of Norfolk, and other Hampton Roads communities. From my view as a frequent visitor to Richmond, I must admit that I truly desire for Hampton Roads to have the support in the arts that the city of Richmond has displayed for itself. Hopefully, the Norfolk Arts District will gain the support of the city and will continue to grow for years to come.

Here are a few examples of some current pieces of art around the district:

RVA Street Art Festival - 2013

The RVA Street Art Festival is a reoccurring art exhibition that includes several local and national artists who present several exhibits in a monotonous area. In September 2013, the exposition took place at the Greater Richmond Transit Company’s bus depot on Cary St. However, access to the exhibit was suspended due to an attack on a security guard in November. Recently, in March 2014, the GRTC announced that the exhibit would reopen to the public at a later undisclosed date.

Crawford Road Bridge

Crawford Road is a narrow and twisting road located in Yorktown, VA. This particular pathway has been made unique by several urban legends and ghost stories involving the road and its bridge. Rumor has it that if you venture onto the bridge at night and turn off your car, you will shortly hear the voices of dead slaves, and you will see several bodies hanging from the bridge and nearby trees. Legends aside, I found courage and ventured out to this bridge to view the local art exhibits (the graffiti) and not the paranormal activity.

The following pictures display the artistic eminence of Crawford Road, not the supernatural exploits. And please do not expect this blog to produce such a folly.
